The word ‘Christ’ comes over into English from the Greek word christos and the word christos is the Greek equivalent of the Hebrew messiach, which comes over in English as ‘Messiah’. Literally the word christos means ‘anointed one’. In the Old Testament there were lots of christs, although not in the ultimate sense. Anyone who was anointed by God for a vocation was an ‘anointed one’. When the priest, the prophet or the king was anointed, he was christos in the general sense. As the promises of God
